My names Joe and I’m the director of photography for the documentary. I feel it’s important for our audience to remain engaged and the camera techniques used are vital for the audience to be gripped – through the use of varying camera angles and shot types. I aim for my artistic style to be identified through the piece. The final visual style of the documentary will be down to me through liasing with other members of the production team such as the producer, camera operator, director and lighting. I will be looking to visit shooting locations prior to filming to help aid me produce a high standard - as planning is essential for my role and for the final product to be successful. I hope my artistic style pays off through my attention to detail.
In terms of ideas, I initially envision
photojournalism to be part of the
documentary. This would incorporate
the Ken Burns effect for images that
we use. The individual who we
interview would be filmed talking and
we would cut to an image relating to what they’re talking about, which would be on the screen. As for documentary style, the Ken Burns effect is very significant. Still images can be very powerful, so by obtaining powerful stills when shooting we will be able to give the audience gripping material as we pan and zoom across them – keeping them engaged.
I am hoping through visiting events and finding good primary sources, we will be able to capture somewhat stunning footage and will be able to apply a nice visual style. The potential problem with
our idea of 'Bronies' is giving the documentary an interesting appeal to the audience with the risk ofhaving just interviews - capturing interesting action will help aid a visual style significantly.
When planning the framing of the shots, I feel we need to shoot the interviewees with a low depth of field as subject related props and décor can be visualised in the out-of-focus backdrop. I feel this will provide a professional finish to
the documentary. I aim to obtain a
diverse range of images and footage to
retain the documentary from being
bland and visually mind numbing.
Through group shots of primaries
and visiting events we aim to produce an interesting image for the eye.
